fluttersforlashes: Hey, sorry if this seems a tad weird but I saw your ucas post and noticed you were applying to Bournemouth. GO TO AUCB ITS AMAZING FOR ANIMATION (i'm guessing you're doing animation from your work??). I'm doing my foundation there at the moment and my housemate does animation, apparently reaaally good. Sorry that was probably no help at all! Anyway, good luck choosing!

Hey! Thanks, I’ve accepted it all now so I’m 99% sure I’m going to Bournemouth, and this has just assured me that I’ve made the right choice!

Thank you, I can’t wait to be down there in September, it’s lovely :3

UWE finally got back to me!
After 3 interviews - some brilliant and some that pushed me to the brink of giving up, I’ve got all my offers back and now I just have absolutely no clue on where to go!
Pretty happy with the fact that they’re all conditionals, especially since the conditions are things such as “Passes current course” and stuff, eep :3
Decisions decisions..

Hands! They’re the bane of my drawing life so I sat and just drew my own in a mirror at college for an hour last week. Working on foreshortening too because I find it so much more interesting c:

I saw it! I saw an actual Banksy piece!
Walking down Park Street in Bristol after my interview at UWE and I just turned around and there it was. One of Banksy’s most iconic pieces, I mean, I shared it on facebook and people who aren’t even into art are liking it. It’s connects visually with so many people, even if just on a fairly shallow “that’s cool ‘coz it’s graffiti” sort of way.
I was not expecting it, I was just walking up the hill looking for a coffee shop with my Dad, telling him how we’re in “Banksy territory” - even he knows Banksy, so that just shows how wide Street Art reaches - wondering if there was anywhere that showed you the locations of some of his work.
It makes me feel a bit sad that someone thought they’d be clever and throw paint at it, but then in a way it’s kind of “Well you can’t moan that it’s graffiti or criminal damage because the original piece was graffiti itself.” - My argument would be that Banksy’s contribution was fairly thought-out and well-executed, the stencil is absolutely brilliant! I don’t know his reasons behind this piece but if it’s there to give someone a chuckle in their everyday hum-drum life then it’s successful, because it made me laugh. But then it’s kind of annoying that someone thought they’d be able to secretly take some of the fame for being “the one that destroyed a Banksy”. But I guess that’s just the world we live in.
Very happy I saw it though, one to cross off of the bucket list, it just added to the brilliant-ness of today and this week :)

Random logos from today for my Digital Manipulation class. I’m such a boring person when it comes to colour.

By Alexandra Zakharova, I’ve been doing some research into puppetry for a current project and this little guy was too wonderful not to post, he is called Benjamin and he has to be one of the most illustrative, beautiful figures I’ve seen. He is also a fully functional puppet for animations which makes him all the better.

‘he is at the seaside, having his shirt unbuttoned he attracts birds, covers his red hair to save it from the sun and he, young Benjamin, being so tender and dreamy enjoys spring, taking in the sweet air through his thin skin.’

Oh good grief this puppet is gorgeous! Totally what I’m aiming to do with my Final Major Project so I’m just going to leave this here for now..

In honour of the brilliant and wonderful author Roald Dahl, Royal Mail has created a series of 6 special stamps from some of his most famous children’s books. As always the distinctive illustrations of Quentin Blake which just go hand-in-hand with all of Dahl’s stories, provide the images on the stamps. As a child all of his books were stories that I would read tirelessly, I’m also thrilled that The Twits has been included as it is often forgotten about, it’s my absolute favourite.

Oh! These are so gorgeous!

Thank you so much! The more I read about The Comedy Carpet the more I can’t wait to see it and I haven’t seen any photos of it that up close before so that site is really interesting!

Thanks :)

Today’s little fan-girlling.. thing.

Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (1961)

Things that make me love this little piece from the film:

  • The little sway that Roger has when he stands at the top of the stairs at 0.17. - It’s amazing how much that little detail stands out for me. The fact that he sways a little as he walks out of the door makes it just that much more believable, he actually possesses very natural and human characteristics, and I’m sure the animator purposely did that knowing that hardly anyone will notice, but knowing that it’s those things that matter. And then the way he continues down the stairs with a slight skip/jog, that whole walk sequence is brilliant!
  • The audio - the music, the voices. They’re brilliant, they’re why mid-20th Century Disney inspires me so much. They all come together to make a lovely piece.
  • The chemistry between the characters. Even though they’re animated, it’s still important to feel that there is a connection and you can tell that there is between Roger/Anita and Pongo/Perdita.
  • Cruella DeVille. - She’s so outrageously scary, seeing her silhouette takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of how scary I found her, she’s brilliantly done!
  • The comedic timing - Roger’s little movements that show he’s mocking Cruella, and then the fact that he goes and hides upstairs and plays Cruella’s ‘theme tune’ (essentially), rather loudly. It’s a great and clever way of explaining the source of the music and keeping the scene light-hearted. Especially when he starts with the trumpet while she’s talking. I suppose I love this part because it suits my sense of humour, - his wife is trying to have a serious talk with a rather intimidating woman and he’s cutting off the conversation with his loud and distracting music. Also, the fact that he walks back into the room when Cruella has exited, further mocking her with his singing/clothing/actions
  • The smoke! - My friend sat and watched this scene with me earlier and turned and said “How do you create smoke in cartoons?” - I don’t know, but hopefully one day I’ll learn.
  • The cloth movements. Especially in Cruella’s fur coat. Good gracious, the swing on that coat is so smooth and fluid.

The sound, walk cycles, timing and textures in this scene are brilliant! The acting is awesome, particularly Roger’s. I need to get this movie on DVD!

Tonight’s drawing, I’m quite liking the shading but the mapping out is shocking!
